There's a few cards that I keep and don't mind paying the annual fees. These card have a good SUB and also give me perks like free hotel stays each year anywhere around the world. Here's a quick look at which cards I've got and the perks that come with them. In summary I care about: travel insurance, free night stays, purchase protection and return protection.
1. American Express Marriott Bonvoy Card
The American Express Marriott Bonvoy Card gets me an annual free night. Marriott probably has one of the most extensive portfolio of properties around the world. For the $95 annual fee, I get a free night certificate to use at any Marriott Bonvoy property costing up to 35,000 points, This can come in handy when you need a single night stay at a hotel that otherwise would cost over $200. Last year my redemption was at a JW resort where rooms were selling for $500 per night.
Having this card also gets me 15 annual night stays, if you care about status. I currently am Platinum mainly because I have this card and the business card which nets me 30 nights a year. Platinum needs 50 nights a year. There's usually an promo every year which gives 2 nights for every night stayed. If you get amongst its usually not too hard to get to Platinum. That will give you NUA which is nightly award certs which can be used to upgrade to suites. My most recent upgrade was to a suite that costed over $1300/night.

2. Chase United Credit Card
The Chase United Credit Card gave me a good sign up bonus and it has the $0 annual fee for the first year. There's been some changes to this card recently but still I do value this card since I travel a fair bit in United. Also, since this card has travel insurance I typically book all my holidays and car rentals (primary coverage) on this card. Those non refundable fares are all good now.
Here's some other benefits that's good to have.
Baggage Delay Insurance
Reimburses you for essential purchases like toiletries and clothing for baggage delays over 6 hours by passenger carrier up to $100 a day for 3 days.
Lost Luggage Reimbursement
If you or an immediate family member check or carry-on luggage that is damaged or lost by the carrier, you're covered up to $3,000 per passenger.
Trip Delay Reimbursement
If your common carrier travel is delayed more than 12 hours or requires an overnight stay, you and your family are covered for unreimbursed expenses made with your United Explorer Card, such as meals and lodging, up to $500 per ticket.
Trip Cancellation/Interruption Insurance
You can be reimbursed up to $1,500 per person and $6,000 per trip for your pre- paid, non-refundable passenger fares, if your trip is cancelled or cut short by sickness, severe weather and other covered situations.
Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver
Decline the rental company’s collision insurance and charge the entire rental cost to your United Explorer Card. Coverage is primary and provides reimbursement up to the actual cash value of the vehicle for theft and collision damage for most rental cars in the U.S. and abroad.

3. American Express Business Marriott Bonvoy Card
Lastly, I have the American Express Business Marriott Bonvoy Card. I only have this card for the free night and to get Platinum status with Marriott. Having this card and the personal card nets me a total of 30 nights automatically every year. In addition to that, the free night when used leaves me with 32 nights per year. It's also got a great SUB.

Using this link will give you 3 Free Night Awards, Redemption level up to 50,000 Marriott Bonvoy points for each bonus Free Night Award. I value these redemption well over $1500 for the 3 nights stay.
4. Chase Hyatt Credit Card
The Chase Hyatt Credit Card offers a free night's stay every year at one of Hyatt's hotels. There are some sick hotels around the world that's part of Hyatt like Alila or Hyatt vacation clubs/resorts. Off season I think you should be able to find a redemption night. This perk alone outweighs the card's annual fee as the free night often has a cash value that exceeds the cost of holding the card. What's even better is that I have gotten an upgraded room every year.
Sadly, this card is not accepting any new applications currently.
5. Amex Blue Cash Preferred®

BCP is somewhat of a recent addition for me. I only keep this card since it has return protection. There's been a couple of times I wanted to buy things from vendors that had "Sale Final" or "No Refunds" policy. I still wanted the things to gift, but wasn't sure if they would like them. However, this card give you 90 day return protection. This is the only reason I keep it. If there's ever a time I want to buy something I think I might not want - then I put the charge on this card.
